Suncoat Vegan, Water-Based Nail Polish in Platinum

It's pretty obvious that most nail polish is toxic. Just take a whiff of almost any bottle and you'll know that you don't want to be exposed to those fumes for extended periods of time. Suncoat looks to solve the nail polish problem. Founded by a chemist who created a safe, non-hazardous option for her 7-year old daughter who wanted to experiment with nail polish. Sweetest story ever. And to add to that, all Suncoat products are formulated and manufactured in Guelph, Ontario - Canadian pride!

This (Mani) Monday, I'm wearing the Suncoat Water-Based Nail Polish in Platinum ($9.99). The Water-based polish range includes 23 colours, all of which are environmentally friendly, non-flammable, odor-free, and contain mineral pigments and natural colorants. 

Platinum is a metallic-finish nail polish. The Suncoat website warns that "Some of the nail polish colors may not be as intense as they look in the bottle. This is partly because earth pigments, instead of FD&S dyes, are being used to color the nail polish."  This is indeed the case with Platinum. The polish is extremely sheer and it took me a whopping seven coats to get it to a level of opacity that I was satisfied with. Furthermore the polish is slightly streaky and is not self-leveling. Although the polish took way more coats than I had expected, the polish is quite thin and thick drying, so it only took about a minute between each coat and I was happy with the final result. The polish chipped after 2 days without a top coat (typical of most polishes for me). 

Suncoat offers polishes formulated with natural ingredients in several pretty colours. However the "natural" factor seems to be somewhat traded off with performance (opacity, staying power). So, the choice is really up to you. If you aren't willing to give up one-coat opacity and 2 weeks of staying power, skip Suncoat. If you believe in using non-toxic beauty products, then Suncoat is a stellar choice for nail polish. 

Ingredients: Aqua (water, ~65% in formula), acrylate copolymer / styrene-acrylate copolymer (~28% in formula), (all under 4%): propylene glycol n-butyl ether, dipropylene glycol dibenzoate. may contain [+/-] mica (CI 77019), titanium dioxide (CI 77891), ferric ferrocyanide, iron oxide (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), chromium oxide (CI 77288), carmine (CI 75470)
